Fun and Delicious Things to Do in and Around Pittsburgh This Mother’s Day

Date:

Mother’s Day is approaching, and if you haven’t already, now’s the time to plan the perfect day for yourself or your own mom. To help make the day special, we’ve researched some of the best restaurants and events the Greater Pittsburgh area has to offer this May 12.

There are a lot of options when planning Mother’s Day. If young children are involved, breakfast in bed or a selection of favorite morning teas, coffees, pastries or eggs prepared before she wakes up would start the day off right. If brunch is mom’s thing, and who are we kidding, it’s everybody’s thing, check out any number of wonderful Mother’s Day brunches in and around town.

Morcilla in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood is a spicy choice. Brunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a $45 prix fixe menu and a complimentary glass of sparkling wine for dining mothers. The prix fixe menu includes Tortilla Española, Pork Conserva and Churros.

If mom prefers a wide variety of choices, check out the Grand Concourse in Station Square, where the endless options include, salmon Rockefeller, omelet, waffle, and pancake stations, bananas foster, a pasta station, and much more. Reservations are recommended.

If you want to keep it simple, head to one of two Pamela’s Diners in Mt. Lebanon or the Strip District for delicious crepes and a full breakfast menu. Or you can try Waffles, INCaffeinated, which features both gourmet savory and sweet dishes on top of a crispy and buttery sourdough waffle. Diners choose sweet toppings like fresh cut strawberries, raspberry sauce, and whipped cream. Or you can add savory bites like bacon, cheddar cheese, and scallions inside and out.

A great place to burn off some of that brunch is the Pittsburgh Zoo, which is offering free admission to all moms on Mother’s Day. A beautiful plot of land in the hills near Highland Park, the zoo offers a state-of-the-art aquarium, Tropical and Asian Forests, the African Savanna, and many other exotic habitats alongside a walking path that is sure to get the blood flowing.

Next, relax with a nice cup of tea. The Sleeping Octopus is hosting "High Tea", which they describe as a full-sensory, communal tea party. Pastry Chef and James Beard Semifinalist Casey Renee will provide an array of sweet and savory options, with accompanying teas. Guests are encouraged to wear hats, and “Sunday fineries.”

If mom still wants to keep cruising around, do just that. The Gateway Clipper Fleet is offering a Mother’s Day Cruise that includes a buffet, bar, DJ and all the sights and sounds of downtown Pittsburgh from the beautiful open, upper or lower deck located inside the boat.

If the family needs to get off their feet, grab a seat at one of many shows playing in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Shows and times are posted on the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust website.

Whatever you choose for your Mother’s Day activities, we hope it’s an enjoyable and relaxing day for you and the ones you love.
